Asus Shrunk the Bezels on Its New Laptop to Just 25mm

One of the innovations they’re showing off is a laptop that is as close to being bezel-free as anyone has ever come.I’m actually writing this post on a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, which features one of their InfinityEdge displays. The bezels are pretty darn slim. Slim enough that when I use a laptop with a run-of-the-mill display I tend to fixate on how un-skinny the bezels are.Somehow Asus has managed to make Dell’s bezels look freakishly wide. The display on the ZenBook S13 is bordered by just 2.5mm of bezel. Asus says that works out to a screen-to-body ratio of 97 percent.Like some of the company’s other laptops, the ZenBook S13 is hinged so that part of the lid rotates down to form a stand. It’s A slick little trick that has two effects. One is that it angles the keyboard to a more comfortable typing position. The other is that it makes the bottom bezel disappear almost completely. One downside is that the way the ZenBook opens doesn’t leave enough room to jam in a webcam at the bottom. On top of that (literally), the 2.5mm top bezel wouldn’t work either.Rather than just skip the webcam entirely, Asus decided to embrace the notch trend. Instead of going down, as smartphone makers do, Asus went up.Just like the hinge packs a one-two punch, so does the camera hump. One, it let Asus keep the top bezel mostly razor-thin. Two, it provides a little something for you to grab on to when you need to open the S13, as Liliputing’s Brad Linder noted when he checked it in Vegas this week. The ZenBook S13 has a lot of other things going for it, like 8th-gen Intel processors, GeForce MX150 graphics, up to 1TB of storage, and a battery that lasts for about 15 hours… but man, dig those crazy bezels!More on Launches First Rollable OLED TVThis $1,000 Robot Can Fold Your Laundry in MinutesNew Mophie Battery Cases Solve Dumb iPhone Port Problemlast_img read more
