Hugo Boss earnings up after it saw strong sales in Asia

first_img GERMAN fashion group Hugo Boss yesterday raised its 2010 outlook after a faster-than-expected recovery in the luxury goods market, together with its strategy of opening more stores, helped it beat third-quarter forecasts. After a sharp downturn, the luxury market has started to recover in 2010, driven by tourist shoppers from emerging markets such as China. In its third quarter, Hugo Boss saw EBITDA jump 42 per cent to €150m (£132m).It now forecasts operating profits will be 20 per cent up on last year, against earlier estimates of between 10 per cent and 12 per cent.“Suits seem to fly off hangers,” the Frankfurt-based trader said. Its shares have gained 79 per cent this year as prospects for the luxury sector have improved.A spokeswoman said Hugo Boss was satisfied with all of its markets and was aiming to open up to 60 of its own shops in 2010, which would take the total to 425.Hugo Boss, majority-owned by private equity company Permira, said third-quarter results were driven by its growing retail business and a Chinese joint venture with franchise partner Rainbow, which it intends to use to boost its retail presence in the Asia/Pacific region. It said it would give more details in its nine-month results, to be published on 2 November. Last week, chief executive Claus-Dietrich Lahrs said that luxury markets might bounce back much faster than previously thought. The powerful unions, which have a history of crushing reform, have vowed to match his resolve.“If we do nothing… the system will explode,” interior minister Brice Hortefeux told LCI television, as the government kept up its appeal to a public that feels it is being unfairly punished for failures in the social security system.Petrol pumps are drying up, truckers said they would block key roads from last night, and after a day of disrupted trains, rail unions agreed new strikes today that could halt two-thirds of regular trains and half the express TGV services.A fresh nationwide march against the pension reform – which would raise the minimum and full retirement ages by two years to 62 and 67 respectively – was set for tomorrow, testing Sarkozy’s determination to stand by a key policy. “The right to strike is not the right to prevent access to a fuel depot. This is an illegal action,” said Prime Minister Francois Fillon. The UFIP oil industry lobby warned that strikes running at all France’s 12 refineries could cause serious fuel supply problems by mid-week, and the government may have to tap emergency reserves. Grant Thornton reports 40pc surge in annual pre-tax profit

first_img KCS-content Monday 18 October 2010 8:24 pm Share Business and financial adviser Grant Thornton yesterday said annual pre-tax profits grew by 40.2 per cent to £77.6m following its merger with Robson Rhodes and a period of restructuring and cost-cutting.In the year to 30 June the firm’s revenue rose 0.4 per cent to £379.7m. Advisory revenue grew 11.1 per cent to £151.2m but Assurance revenue was down by 6.2 per cent to £135.5m and Tax by 4.8 per cent to £93.0m.Chief executive Scott Barnes said Grant Thornton’s profitability and cash position had created a platform for growth as the firm emerges from the difficult economic environment. Grant Thornton’s strategy is focused on acquisitions to build on its organic growth. This week it acquired litigation support consultancy Legal Inc for integration into its forensic practice.“Our overall performance has been excellent in these conditions. We acted earlier than some others and this is reflected in our 40 per cent growth in pre-tax profits for the year and, against the backdrop of the recession, we have done well to maintain our overall level of revenue,” Barnes said. “We need to increase our profitability further but this was the start I was looking for in my first full year leading the firm.” Grant Thornton reports 40pc surge in annual pre-tax profit Read This NextThe Truth About Bottled Water – Get the Facts on Drinking Bottled WaterGayotRicky Schroder Calls Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl ‘Ignorant Punk’ forThe WrapCNN’s Brian Stelter Draws Criticism for Asking Jen Psaki: ‘What Does theThe WrapDid Donald Trump Wear His Pants Backwards? The consensus expectation was a 9.5 per cent pace. The data published yesterday was broadly in line with forecasts, but was still something of a surprise after China’s unexpected rate rise on Tuesday prompted speculation growth and inflation would be much stronger than expected. Annual inflation rose in September to 3.6 per cent, reaching a 23-month high and smack in line with forecasts. Excluding food prices, inflation slowed. But industrial output — a key indicator of growth momentum — eased to a 13.3 per cent year-on-year increase, its lowest pace in 13 months.“Chinese officials are likely feeling quite pleased with the way the data are playing out,” said Brian Jackson, a HongKong-based economist with Royal Bank of Canada.“Policy measures put in place earlier this year appear to have helped steer the Chinese economy through a middle course between overheating and a serious downturn,” he added.Much of the slowdown can be explained by a higher base of comparison after China’s rebound last year from the global financial crisis. It also is a desired outcome for the government, which has gradually withdrawn the monetary and fiscal stimulus that powered the recovery. Desire draws blank in Falkland Islands

first_img KCS-content Show Comments ▼ OIL explorer Desire Petroleum has failed to strike oil in the Falklands Islands, days after it said it believed it had, denting hopes that the territory will become a major new oil province. The company said extra analysis of data from a key well in the British islands over which Argentina claims sovereignty did not support initial indications of an oil discovery, which saw the stock close 47 per cent down at 70.5p.“This is a major blow to Desire,” broker Evolution said yesterday.Desire said last Thursday it believed it had made the second oil find at its Rachel North well in the North Falkland basin, after rival Rockhopper made the first at its Sea Lion prospect in May, raising hopes of more finds.Desire’s disappointing well at Rachel, however, is the latest setback to cool excitement sparked by the controversial Falklands exploration, to which Argentina objects.Another blow came last Friday when it emerged that ExxonMobil had said there was inadequate oil in the islands to be profitable.Desire’s share price more than doubled in one day in October without the group issuing any news.“They were obviously under a lot of pressure from the stock market to announce something last week and they hadn’t finished acquiring the data … in a normal course of events you wouldn’t put a press release out until you finished doing all the data acquisition,”said an analyst who declined to be named.Desire said the Rachel North well would now be plugged and abandoned and the rig would be moved to drill its Dawn/Jacinta prospect. whatsapp whatsapp Share Monday 6 December 2010 8:27 pm Desire draws blank in Falkland Islands Read This NextFresh Fruit Sushi: Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofCreamy Pumpkin Soup: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofYoga for Beginners: 3 Different Types of Yoga You Should TryFamily ProofHiking Gadgets: Amazon Deals Perfect For Your Next AdventureFamily ProofChicken Bao: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofWhat to Know About ‘Loki’ Ahead of Disney+ Premier on June 9Family ProofBack on the Rails for Summer New York to New Orleans, Savannah and MiamiFamily Proof’A Quiet Place Part II’ Sets Pandemic Record in Debut WeekendFamily ProofA Once in 17 Years Cicada Event in Princeton, New JerseyFamily Proof Tags: NULLlast_img read more
